The Canadian Cement Industry

The Cement Association of Canada (CAC) comprises eight companies that operate 16 cement manufacturing plants across Canada: 1 whiteand 15 Portland grey cement. These companies produce 98% of the cement that is manufactured for the country.

The cement production is concentrated in central Canada. Ontario has 50% and Quebec 17% of the industry’s capacity. The CAC has a partnership with the United States-based Portland Cement Association (PCA) therefore, all CAC members are also members of the PCA.

This industry is a key contributor to Canada’s economic and social development. In 2006, the industry produced more than 14.3 million tons of cement with a value of more than $1.7 billion and provided more than 2000 jobs. The industry’s total production is more than 16.7 million tons when supplementary cementing materials such as fly ash and slag are included.

The cement manufacturing industry realized that an 11 percent increase in energy efficiency per ton of cement produced between 1990 and 2006 and a corresponding reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) intensity of 6.4 percent. However, the industry recognizes that further energy efficiency improvements are required to reduce energy costs and maintain industry competitiveness and make further progress in reducing the industry’s environmental footprint.

Canada’s cement industry, like its partners around the world, is committed to act and ready to collaborate to reduce the industry’s emissions. Their action plan is transparent and accountable, with progress reports to be released every five years. This plan also does not include the purchase of any offsets to meet emissions reduction goals.

With the cost of thermal and electrical energy increasing in recent years, reducing the amount of false air intake in the process has become increasingly important to reduce production costs, improve operation and help reduce CO2 emissions.

At Seal Plus by Motofrenos we are constantly working with our clients to provide the best seal solution that meets their needs and supports their production efficiency. Also, we support our clients with their CO2 emissions goals and fuel consumption efficiency.
